Over the past year, Brookfield Zoo’s efforts have concentrated on greening spaces, increasing tree and pollinator plant populations and implementing water retention solutions for effective stormwater management. At the Tropical Forest Building, Nicor Gas’ funding was used to introduce pollinator plants, arborvitae and a retention pond, creating a pollinator wetland area to alleviate standing water on walkways. At Hamill Family Play Zoo, our funding was used to install pollinator plants, lilacs, hydrangeas, hostas, heucheras, astilbes, spireas and trees such as arborvitae and a maple tree. Additionally, a bee exhibit was introduced to engage and educate visitors on the critical role of pollinators.
