UPDATED: SUV Tears Up La Grange Village Hall Lawn While Board Meets
The car stopped just barely short of smashing into the building itself in a five-car crash that occurred on Monday evening.
UPDATED, THURSDAY, 10:10 P.M.: According to a La Grange Police Department crash report, the driver of the van that narrowly missed hitting La Grange Village Hall was a 77-year-old La Grange man.
The resident was driving south on La Grange Road when he suddenly veered into northbound traffic (he claimed that a parked car suddenly pulled out in front of him.) He sideswiped two northbound cars and two parked cars on the east side of La Grange before careening across Harris Avenue and onto the Village Hall lawn and coming to rest in the bushes in front of the Hall.
The man told police that he had attempted to stop the car in vain. Police tested his brakes and said they appeared to be working properly.

An out-of-control SUV shredded the northwest lawn of La Grange Village Hall on Monday evening at about 8:30 p.m. after being involved in a three-vehicle crash with two compact cars, The Doings La Grange reports.
According to the paper, the van, which left the roadway at the corner of La Grange Road and Harris Avenue, stopped just short of hitting Village Hall itself; while the Village Board was meeting at the time, no one inside was aware of the crash.
A two-man La Grange Public Works crew was out at about 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, laying a mesh net over the damaged, muddy lawn for public safety. They said that the lawn would not be repairable until the summertime, when it will be reseeded.
Warm temperatures and rain on Monday had left the ground soft and malleable and likely more prone to damage from the car’s tires.
No further information was available from La Grange police at this time.
