- Never trick-or-treat alone. Young children should be accompanied by an adult or older child.
- Wear light-colored or reflective clothing, or decorate costumes and candy bags with reflective tape that will glow in a car’s headlights. Costumes should also be fireproof and allow for good peripheral vision.
- Carry a flashlight after dark.
- Walk, don’t run; be aware of traffic; use sidewalks and cross the street only at corners and designated crosswalks.
- Stay reasonably close to home, and consider only going to homes where the residents are known and lights are on.
- Eat only sealed treats and have parents check them.
- Vandalism and other crimes are no more excusable on Halloween than any other time of the year. Be respectful of your neighbors and your community.
- Drivers should exercise extra caution, drive more slowly and use no electronic devices on Halloween evening/night.
- People manning houses should ensure that no decorations present an obstruction, particularly making sure to keep candlelit jack-o-lanterns far from landings and doorsteps.
