LAKE FOREST, IL — Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned Wednesday, announcing he planned to return to coaching after "taking some time to address my health."

Williams has been absent from the team since last week, skipping last week's loss at Tampa Bay due to what team officials described as "personal reasons."

In a statement, Williams thanked the Bears coach and general manager for the opportunity and its president, coaching staff and players for their valued relationships.

"It is with great regret that I tender my resignation as the Defensive Coordinator of the Chicago Bears Football Club effective immediately," Williams said.

"I am taking a step back to take care of my health and my family," he said. "I appreciate the opportunity to work with the Chicago Bears, a storied NFL franchise with a rich history."

Williams has been an NFL assistant coach since 2001, starting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He previously worked as Indianapolis defense backs coach for three years under then-Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus. When Eberflus was hired by the Bears in January 2022, he brought Williams along.

With Williams out on Sunday, Eberflus called plays for the defense. He is expected to do it again when the 0-2 Bears take on the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Prior to the Wednesday afternoon's official confirmation of Williams' resignation, Jon Zaghloul, founder of Sports Talk Chicago, reported that the defensive coordinator's home was raided by law enforcement authorities on Sunday night and that Halas Hall was raided Wednesday morning.

According to Zaghloul, who cited sources familiar with the situation, former Chicago Bears player Charles Tillman, who is also an FBI agent, "broke the news about Alan Williams" to Eberflus, General Manager Ryan Poles and President Kevin Warren.

But Bears representatives denied that Halas Hall was raided Wednesday, according to WSCR Bears reporter Mark Grote and multiple other Bears beat reporters.

In response, Zaghloul said he stands by his source and his reporting.

"I care about the truth of the situation," he said in a social media post. "I'm not in it for the clicks, shares, or likes. I never have been, and never will be."
