WAUKEGAN, IL — Investigators say a Waukegan man was drag racing down Sheridan Road at nearly 100 mph prior to a fatal traffic crash last year in Beach Park.

Peter Kliora was a making a left turn from West Howard Street onto northbound Sheridan Road around 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 10, 2022, when the driver of an Infiniti M35 headed southbound on Sheridan smashed into his Toyota Prius, according to the sheriff's office.

Kliora, a 78-year-old Beach Park resident, was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses reported the Infiniti was driving recklessly, and traffic crash investigators determined its driver had been drag racing another motorist just before the crash, authorities said.

Last week, the Lake County State's Attorney presented the allegations to a grand jury, which indicted the driver of the Infiniti on three felony counts.

Tabios Day, 32, of the 700 block of West Glen Flora Avenue in Waukegan, has been charged with reckless homicide, aggravated reckless driving causing great bodily harm and aggravated street racing in connection with Kliora's death.

A Lake County judge signed a warrant for his arrest, under which Day would need to pay $35,000 to secure his release ahead of a detention hearing.

As of Tuesday afternoon, online sheriff's office records indicate Day in custody at the Lake County Jail. No information about the circumstances of his arrest was immediately available from a sheriff's office spokesperson.
