Victim Of Alleged Murder-For-Hire Identified By Coroner's Office

Cecilia Cuahua-Zopiyactle, a 33-year-old originally from Veracruz, Mexico, was fatally shot by a man hired by her ex, authorities said.

WAUKEGAN, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office identified the woman who found fatally shot in North Chicago by gunman who authorities said was hired by her ex.

Cecilia Cuahua-Zopiyactle, 33, was originally from Veracruz, Mexico, and had recently been living in Waukegan and North Chicago, according to the coroner's office.

Cuahua-Zopiyactle was shot multiple times on the morning of Sept. 22 in the 1000 block of Victoria Avenue and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Three man have been charged with her murder, including a former romantic partner who allegedly agreed to pay a man somewhere between $6,000 and $9,000 to carry out the killing.

Seferino Calihua-Rodriguez, 35, faces charges of solicitation of murder for hire, as well as two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder due to the hitman's failed attempt to kill Cuahua-Zopiyactle's co-worker.

The alleged hitman, 26-year-old Misael Chavarin-Plazola — and the man charged as his driver, 29-year-old Rosalio Diaz-Zarate — have both been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Lake County State's Attorney Eric Rinehart described the slaying as "one of the most calculated and cold-blooded murders we have ever seen."

The three men, all Waukegan residents, remain held at Lake County Jail.
