On four occasions during the school year, the Woodlands Academy community comes together to acknowledge two girls per class and one member of the adult community for living the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education most visibly.

Sacred Heart Awards are given based on a vote of the students, ratified by their advisors, in recognition of good conduct, good spirit, helpful influence and leadership. They remind the Woodlands Academy community of the Goals and Criteria. For the current Sacred Heart awards, the school’s student government selected Goal One: “Students of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to a Personal and Active Faith in God.”

Freshmen Eloise Hartman and Atzi Pulido, sophomores Raphaela Moreira Francis and Kian Kaz, juniors Catherine Murphy and Nicole Waldman, seniors Genesis Galan and Claudia Arguelles Rodriguez, and social studies teacher Maureen Shinnick were recognized on Dec. 5 for their efforts in living out this goal.

The Woodlands Academy tradition of Sacred Heart Awards traces its roots to an older Sacred Heart tradition called Primes, where medals were given for politeness, order and excellence in various academic subjects. Several years ago, Woodlands brought back the tradition of awarding ribbons to which the St. Rose Philippine Duchesne medals are attached.

Since it was held during the season of Advent, the Dec. 5 ceremony began with a blessing of the school’s Advent wreath. Before lighting the first of its five candles, senior Lucy Petherbridge explained: “Advent spans the run-up to Christmas Day, lasting a total of four weeks. … Each candle is lit during one of the four Sundays of this liturgical season. … The flickering flames give light during the dark winter months. Christians represent Jesus as the light that brings peace and joy to a dark world.”
