Lake Zurich Mayor Thomas M. Poynton has signed a Declaration of Local Emergency following this morning’s heavy rainfall that has caused significant flooding in localized areas of the Village.
Significant flooding has occurred in an area centered near Stone Avenue and Thistle Lane, north of Bristol Trail Road. Public Works crews are assisting with pumping water from this area and the Fire Department has assisted residents with evacuating from homes that are experiencing flooding. No injuries have been reported.
Flooding has also caused the failure of a sanitary lift station in the Braemar subdivision, north of Cuba Road and west of Ela Road. This lift station only serves the Braemar subdivision. Residents in the affected area will be without sanitary sewer service until further notice and may experience sewer backups during this time. The Village will be contacting impacted residents via an automatic telephone message with additional information.
Earlier this morning Mayor Poynton and other Village officials toured flooded neighborhoods and met with residents whose homes sustained flood damage. Employees in the Village’s Police, Fire, and Public Works departments have been deployed all morning to assist with flooding related traffic control, emergency rescues, and to assist residents with pumping out water from age 2 flooded neighborhoods. The Village has also activated the CERT team to assist with traffic control near flooded streets and intersections.
As more rain is expected later today, the Village is encouraging residents not to drive through flooded streets and intersections and instead seek an alternative route. Additionally, residents should not attempt to wade through or otherwise swim in flood water as it poses a significant health and safety risk. Residents experiencing an emergency situation should dial 9-1-1.
The lower level of Village Hall also sustained flood damage from this morning’s heavy rains causing the Village Board to move its regular meeting of July 1st from Village Hall to the Police Department headquarters, 200 Mohawk Trail. The meeting will begin at the regular start time of 7:00 p.m. Please visit the Village’s website at www.lakezurich.org for additional information and updates.
