And the Winners Are.....

Area restaurants win burger contest for charity

It’s all the buzz in Lake county. Partners for Progress, NFP Annual Hoe Down was celebrated with a burger contest on September 7, 2019. Seven area restaurants participated for the Judge's Choice award and the People’s choice award.

The event was held at Canlan Sportsplex in Lake Barrington. Over 500 attendees enjoyed burgers from the Assembly Bar & Café, Hoffman Estates, Lindy’s Landing, Wauconda, Kuma’s Corner, Vernon Hills, The Onion Pub, Lake Barrington, Route 12 Bar & Grill, Antioch, Spears in Wheeling, and Taphouse Grill, Palatine. The evening was a huge success as attendees ate burgers, enjoyed cocktails and danced the night away.

There were over 150 raffles baskets and 52 silent auction items which included get great away trips, rare wines and spirits, and unique hand-crafted goods.

The formal presentation was kicked off by Lake Zurich High School Bare Voices A Cappella singing 3 numbers and receiving a standing ovation. Mistress of ceremonies, Jackie Sestak was a fresh and entertaining emcee. She presented each burger to a panel of five judges. The judges were James Thompson - Chair of the Lake Barrington Community Relations, Special Events & Veterans Committee, John Mahler - Owner Cook , Cork, Fork in Palatine, Patrick Beach - Professor, Hospitality Management, William Rainey Harper College, Tim Kovac - Brew Master/Founder/Owner Small Town Brewery and Spirit Water and Shelly Dripps - Dorfler’s Meat Market Senior Cook.

The winners of the Judge's choice award were; First place: The Onion Pub, Second Place: Lindys Landing and Third Place: The Assembly. All attendees voted for their favorite burger. The People's Choice winners; First Place: Taphouse Grill, Second Place: The Assembly and Third Place: Kuma’s Corner. Each winning restaurant received a Big Green, a kamado-style ceramic charcoal barbecue cooker along with accessories to make it a smoker.

The evening concluded with square and line dancing provided by Dick Crouse from Palatine.

Proceeds of the event support Partners for Progress, NFP. Partners for Progress is a therapeutic riding stable located in Wauconda Illinois. The stable has over 20 horses and supports over 200 children and adults with physical, mental and emotional challenges. Partners for Progress is one of the few therapeutic riding stables that offer goal - based therapies. Several of their teen clients, who have been participating in programs at the stable since the age of 3, were featured in a video. The video showed how the stable has helped them through every stage of their life and how they are now becoming independent adults as they reach 18 years of age. Each shared how their life journey and dreams are being achieved due to the dedication, care and programs at Partners for Progress.
