2 Wanted After Fight, Shots Fired At Gathering Near Mundelein: Police

Sheriff’s officials say two men allegedly attacked a man at a gathering near Mundelein and one of the suspects fired a gun after pointing it at the victim’s relative.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:50 p.m. on September 23 to a residence in the 18900 block of West Oak Avenue in unincorporated Mundelein for a disturbance in progress.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said dispatchers learned there was an active fight in the backyard of the home. Deputies arrived and learned the victim, a 28-year-old man, was attacked by two suspects.

Covelli said the suspects were identified as Raymond Gates, 25, of Mundelein, and Juan Avila, 26, of Mundelein. The victim told deputies there is an ongoing dispute between him and Avila.

Avila and Gates arrived at a home where the victim was attending a gathering, Covelli said.

The two suspects attacked the victim and Gates pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the victim’s relatives, Covelli said.

Covelli said Gates fired at least two shots into the air before he and Availa fled in a vehicle.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived but could not locate the vehicle or suspects.

They issued a regional broadcast of the incident and vehicle description. The vehicle and the suspects were still not able to be located.

Arrest warrants were obtained for Gates and Avila almost a month after the incident on October 17.

Both warrants are active and both men are wanted, Covelli said.

Gates was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, battery, disorderly conduct and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Avila was charged with battery and disorderly conduct.
