7 Sled Hills To Check Out In (Or Near) Northern Lake County

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The snow has finally arrived and more is on its way this week. So, for those outdoor enthusiasts seeking a little bit of thrill, it's time to dust off those sleds.

We've got a roundup of some of our favorite hills — as well as suggested hills readers have been praising over the years — below:

Warren Township Sled Hill in Gurnee

Warren Township has two designated sled hills: a bunny sled hill and a large sled hill. Sledding is allowed when there is an adequate snow base during normal park hours, which is from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The hills are lit up at night. Those stopping out should be aware that the hills re not supervised and sledders must determine if the conditions are appropriate for sledding. Snowboards and toboggans are prohibited, and sled hill conditions are posted to the RainOut line 847-999-0405.

Gelatin Park in Grayslake

Gelatin Park's "cardio hill" is transformed into a sledding hill during the winter months. Gelatin Park is conveniently located between the Grayslake Area Public Library and Central Park — you can get closest to the park and hill by accessing Railroad Avenue from Center Street.

Hart's Hill in Round Lake

The hill at 51 W. Hart Road in Round Lake is lit up at night and open until 9 p.m. daily.

Lake Villa Sled Hill at Caboose Hill

The hill at "Caboose Park," 37908 N. Fairfield Road in Lake Villa, will be lit up for evening use between the hours of 5:30 and 10 p.m., weather and conditions permitting. The best way to get to the hill is by parking in the Grand Avenue parking lot.

Century Park Sled Hill in Vernon Hills

Century Park Arboretum sled hill and ice rink is located at 1401 Indianwood Drive in Vernon Hills. The sled hill is lit until 9 p.m. daily, and the pavilion at the park is open as a warming shelter on the weekends from 1 to 7 p.m. For those stopping out skating there are free loaner skates available, in limited quantities, on weekends when the ice rink is open but all sizes may not be available. Check the posted sign at the sled hill, the Vernon Hills Park District website, or call the weather hotline, (847) 996-6616, to see if conditions are favorable for winter activities on any given day.

Adler Memorial Park in Libertyville

Located at 1500 N. Milwaukee Avenue, the sled hills at Adler Memorial Park in Libertyville is a favorite int he winter.

Wilmot Mountain, in WI north of Lake County

Just over the Wisconsin border, Wilmot Mountain's bubly Tubing Park has 22 lanes that are more than 1,000 feet long. The bubly Tubing Park Area is located half a mile south of the main ski and snowboard entrance, at the intersection of County Highway CK and Highway in Wilmot, WI. Tubes are provided at the park and surface conveyor lifts are used to take sledders back up to the top of the hill.Tickets can be purchased online and those stopping out must be at least 42 inches tall to take part in tubing.
