CHICAGO — Former U.S. Democratic Senator Adlai Stevenson III died Monday at his Chicago home from dementia at 90-years-old, his son confirmed.

Stevenson was the son of former Illinois Gov. Adlai Stevenson II and ran for governor twice during his career, losing to Republican Gov. Jim Thompson by the closest margin in an Illinois gubernatorial race in modern history.

He was also the great-grandson of former Vice President Adlai Stevenson. Before his health declined, Stevenson's son said he kept active by volunteering at the Adlai Stevenson Center on Democracy in Libertyville.
