Bicyclist Critically Injured After Being Hit By Car Near Libertyville

The 33-year-old Mundelein man was biking on the Des Plaines River Trail and was hit by a car while trying to cross Rockland Road.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 33-year-old Mundelein man was critically injured when he was hit by car while riding his bicycle Saturday near Libertyville.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of the collision at the intersection of West Rockland Road and the Des Plaines River pedestrian/bike trail at about noon, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Authorities say the bicyclist appears to have been heading north on the Des Plaines River Trail when he was hit by a westbound Toyota Prius, which was driven by a 39-year-old Gurnee man. The cyclist was taken to a nearby hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Prius and a child who was riding as a passenger in the car were not injured, according to police.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
