The Cary Police Department responded around 4:20 p.m. Monday to Hoffman Park near West Main Street and Jefferson Lane for a report of a battery.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said that a woman was jogging on the path in Hoffman Park when she was approached by a man who was also walking on the path.

The woman believed the man was signaling to her to stop running, which she did.

“As she was removing her headphones from her ears to attempt to speak with the male subject, he placed both of his hands on her jacket, below her neck,” Naydenoff said.

The woman pushed the man away from her and she fled the area to report the incident to police.

Naydenoff said the man grabbed the woman’s jacket but the battery was not sexual in nature. It is unclear what the man’s intentions were.

The suspect is described as being of East Indian descent, approximately 5-foot-10, 35 to 40 years old, wearing a blue turban and carrying a stick, which was approximately 18-24 inches.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the man involved in the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cary Police Department at 847-639-2341.

“The Cary Police Department reminds citizens to remain aware of their surroundings, and report suspicious people and activity immediately by calling 911,” Naydenoff said.
