McHenry Woman Accused Of Killing Ex-Husband In Wisconsin Cold Case Free From Jail After Posting Bail

A McHenry woman charged with intentional homicide following a cold case in Kenosha is free from jail after posting $500,000 bail, records show.

Roxanna L. Collins, 70, of the 2700 block of Evergreen Circle in McHenry, was freed from the Kenosha County Jail at 6:49 p.m. on June 3 after paying the court-imposed bail, court records show.

She is due to return to court on Wednesday on a motion hearing, records show.

Collins, formerly Roxanna Vanderzee, was arrested Thursday and held in the McHenry County Jail on a $75,000 cash bond before waiving extradition during a hearing Friday morning.

Collins and co-defendant, John J. Viskocil, 70, of the 9100 block of 402nd Avenue in Genoa City, Wisconsin, are accused of the homicide of David A. Vanderzee, who was found dead of an execution-style gunshot wound to his head at his Powers Lake residence on Sept. 23, 2003, Kenosha County sheriff officials said.

Viskocil remains held in Kenosha County Jail on $500,000 bond, records show.

The two are charged with First Degree Intentional Homicide with an enhancement of Use of a Dangerous Weapon, Kenosha County court records show.

The website Kenosha County Eye details the murder of David Vanderzee, claiming Roxanna Collins married Vanderzee eight weeks before his 2003 murder after the two met online in 2000.

Investigators believe the marriage was part of a murder-for-profit that ended with David’s execution inside his own home, the website claims.

Complaints obtained by the website allege Collins was having a romantic relationship with Viskocil before, during, and immediately after her marriage to Vanderzee, adding that the pair spoke constantly and appeared unusually close in 2003.

The media has reported that Collins moved in with Viskocil only weeks after Vanderzee was found murdered in his home.

On the night of the murder, Roxanna claimed she got off work at 5:45 p.m. and went shopping in Gurnee before returning home at 8:00 p.m. to find her husband lying dead in a pool of blood.

During the 2003 investigation, Viskocil told police he visited Vanderzee around 2:00 p.m. the day of the murder, but went home, covered his boat, and went fishing on Powers Lake from 6 until 8 p.m.

He also told police he fell into the lake while fishing and changed his clothes to avoid dripping water on the floor, the website claims.

Witnesses interviewed during the investigation told police Viskocil and Roxanna were clearly in a romantic relationship.

Investigators also seized multiple .38 caliber revolvers and boxes of matching ammunition from Viskocil’s home in the weeks after the murder, the website says.

Kenosha sheriff officials said the arrests were the result of continued diligent detective work and investigation, which included a fresh review of the case by the Kenosha County District Attorney.

“This case highlights the significant progress being made in solving long-standing murders through renewed investigative efforts,” sheriff officials said on their Facebook website. “The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office is committed to protecting our community members and holding criminals accountable for their actions.”
