National Ice Cream Day 2019: Chicago Area's Sweet Deals

ACROSS ILLINOIS — National Ice Cream Day is Sunday, July 21, and there are plenty of tasty deals across the Chicago suburbs to help enjoy the sweet day.

In one of the most important acts of his presidency, Ronald Regan in 1984 proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month and established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in July. The third Sunday in July is this Sunday, and many places are offering ice cream treats for free or at reduced prices.

Long Grove: Illinois Covered Bridge Creamery; 320 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove. Enjoy buy one, get one free scoops and live music!

Graeter's Ice Cream: National Ice Cream Day is also the company’s 149th birthday, and celebrate we all must with $1.49 single-scoop sugar cones at all 55 shops, including Northbrook (1347 Shermer Road) and Winnetka (940 Green Bay Road).

Whole Foods Market (Several Chicago area locations): If you're a prime member, you'll receive 35 percent off "all ice cream and novelties" at Whole Foods Market locations including Vernon Hills, Deerfield, Northbrook and many more between July 17 and July 30.

Potbelly Sandwich Shop (several locations): Purchase an entree, get a large milkshake for free if you mention "National Ice Cream Day" at the register.

Nutella Café Chicago: 189 N. Michigan Ave — from 3 to 5 p.m. Nutella Café Chicago will be giving away free frozen treats. The first 50 customers at each location will receive one free Frozen Nutella Pop topped with chopped hazelnuts; the perfect frozen treat featuring everyone’s favorite hazelnut spread. If you aren’t one of the first 50, not to worry because during the remainder of the day, customers will receive a complimentary scoop of a gelato flavor of their choice. Flavor options include: Artigianale (Gelato made with Nutella) and Fior di Latte (Flower of Milk).

• Insomnia Cookies: Offering a free scoop of ice cream with any purchase in-store all day. Available year round: Cookiewiches, a customizable pairing of ice cream sandwiched between warm traditional or deluxe cookies.

• Johnny Rockets: Get a free milkshake with an entrée purchase on July 21 at Johnny Rockets restaurants nationwide. You can also get free shake samples from July 18 through July 20 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

• PetSmart: Stop into a PetSmart on July 20 or 21 to get free ice cream for your pooch. You'll get free, dog-friendly ice cream along with a dog biscuit.
• Fannie May: Participating Fannie May stores across Chicago will be offering a Buy 1 Scoop of Ice Cream, Get One Free promotion. Choose your favorite Fannie May flavor – vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mint chocolate, salted caramel and cookie dough – or mix and match.
