2 People Suffer Broken Legs When Car Drives into Church

As people lined up for a food drive Saturday morning, a woman drove into them and into the front doors of Wildwood Presbyterian.

A woman crashed her car through the front doors of Wildwood Presbyterian Church near Grayslake on Saturday morning, striking several people there for a food drive.

The 8:30 a.m. accident pinned one person against a wall, according to a press release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department. Many people were standing in line outside the church at 18630 West Old Gages Lake Road when a 72-year-old woman driving a 2002 Toyota Camry in the parking lot lost control and drove into the front of the church, stroking several people and the food drive tables.

Karen Lovett, who was pinned to the wall, sustained a broken leg, broken shoulder and fractured right ankle, reports the Daily Herald, while Chuck Monson suffered two broken legs.

Lovett, however, managed to crack a joke after her bones were broken.

“She was joking the whole time,” church member Tony Biondo told the Daily Herald the next day. “She said, ‘I didn’t think this was going to happen today.’”

Six people were hurt, including the driver. The injured were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center.

Church officials told the Daily Herald the 72-year-old driver was a client of the food pantry. The church tried to carry on services and activities despite the smashed front wall on Sunday.
