Police Search For Driver In Drive-By Shooting; 2 Charged In Incident

The drive-by shooting happened early Sunday in northern Lake County.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — Two Waukegan teens face charges for allegations they fired a gun at two women during a drive-by shooting early Sunday. Meanwhile, police are searching for a third person who they believe drove the getaway car and led police on a high-speed chase in northern Lake County over the weekend.

Jonathan Garcia, 18, of the 1300 block of Judge Place in Waukegan, and a 16-year-old Waukegan boy, whose name is not being released because he is a minor, have been charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the incident.

The duo is accused of opening fire on two women after the women left a bar in North Chicago early Sunday. The women were driving on Green Bay Road when the teens, who were in a grey Dodge, pulled up alongside them.

After firing at the women, the shooters then left the scene, police said. The two women in the vehicle suffered gunshot wounds — one was shot in the eye and the other was shot in the leg, police said.

After the police attempted to pull the Dodge over, it fled and ended up evading police on three different occasions before an officer used a tire deflation device, which stuck the vehicle, according to a news release. The Dodge still continued to speed away but ended up crashing into a heavily wooded area near Route 173 and Joana Avenue in Zion.

Garcia and the juvenile fled on foot. Police located the accused shooters and took them into custody, according to the news release.

Garcia appeared in court Monday, authorities said. Meanwhile, the juvenile was transported to the Hulse Juvenile Detention Center and a hearing will take place to determine if the juvenile will be held in secure detention.

The incident remains under investigation and police are working to identify and arrest a third person, who they believe was driving the Dodge, police said Monday. Additional charges are possible.
