Woman And Dog Injured In House Fire In Marengo

A house was deemed uninhabitable following a fire in the 400 block of 5th Avenue in Marengo that left a dog and a woman injured.

A woman was injured and a dog was rushed to a local veterinarian following a house fire in Marengo Wednesday, fire officials said.

The Marengo Fire Protection District responded around 1:33 p.m. Wednesday to the 400 block of 5th Avenue in Marengo for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found heavy flames and smoke coming from the first-floor window of a single-story single-family residence.

Marengo Fire Chief John Kimmel said that a woman was home at the time of the fire. She suffered burns and smoke inhalation.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene but she declined transport to the hospital, Kimmel said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire within 10 minutes and rescued a dog, who suffered from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters treated the dog at the scene by giving it oxygen and police rushed the dog to a local veterinarian for treatment.

An investigation is underway into the cause of the blaze but fire officials do not believe it to be suspicious in nature, Kimmel said.

The house was deemed uninhabitable and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
