House Safety Checks Recommended By Manhattan Fire

The Manhattan Fire Protection District encourages community members to complete the following safety checks around the house.

MANHATTAN, IL — The Manhattan Fire Protection District encourages residents to start the week off right by completing several safety checks around the house, and to look for:

  • Are your outlets overloaded? (use surge protected power strips - not extension cords).
  • Do you have smoke alarms on every level? Have you tested them? They need to be tested monthly (even hard-wired alarms).
  • Have you emptied the lint trap in your dryer? You should be cleaning it after every load.
  • Is the area around your stove, free of clutter?
  • Do you have a clear 3-foot area around your furnace and water heater?
  • How about CO alarms? You should have one on every level, but if you only have one, make sure it is placed outside your sleeping area.
