District 308 Voters Say No To 1 Percent Sales Tax

Voters voted overwhelmingly against a 1 percent sales tax to give District 308 a $5.6 million annual boost.

KENDALL COUNTY, IL — Voters decided on the outcome of the Illinois governor's race and other state races, as well as local contests including the Kendall County clerk and county board. Kendall County voters overwhelmingly said no to a 1 percent sales tax on certain purchases in a move that would have provided Community Unit School District with an annual revenue of $5,674,372.

In August, the school board voted unanimously to put the question on the Nov. 6 ballot.

In Illinois, school districts representing 51 percent of a county's student population have the power to place a sales tax referendum on the ballot. With more than 18,000 students for the current school year, District 308 represents more than 50 percent of the student population in Kendall County. The district says it is the seventh largest of 852 public school districts in Illinois and one of the fastest growing.

With 87 of 87 precincts reporting:

  • Yes: 36.76 percent
  • No: 63.24 percent

According to District 308 Superintendent John Sparlin, the funding could have been used for projects including roof repairs, ongoing maintenance, energy efficiency, parking lot repairs, security, safety, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, additions, renovations and new facilities."
