Boy, 15, Caught With Gun During Traffic Stop In Naperville: Cops

NAPERVILLE, IL — An Aurora boy, 15, faces felony charges after police say he was caught with a semiautomatic handgun during a traffic stop in Naperville.

The teen was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor possession of ammunition without a FOID card in connection with the May 5 incident.

Around 3:15 a.m. on the above date, police say they pulled over the teen in a Nissan Altima for improper lane usage near the intersection of Iroquois and Washington. While speaking with the teen, officers saw him reach behind the driver's seat, where they spotted a loaded CPX 2 handgun, a news release said.

According to police, the teen took the gun out of a lockbox at this mother's house, and then left with the gun and the car without his mother's permission.

“The allegations that a 15-year-old boy took his mother’s car and gun without her knowledge and was found shortly after three o’clock in the morning driving through Naperville are extremely disturbing,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres added, "It is quite disturbing that someone so young would engage in such reckless and allegedly criminal behavior, but I’m extremely grateful for the proactive efforts of our officers, who intervened and potentially prevented additional crimes from being committed."

The teen is set to appear in court on June 14.
