As the nation looks ahead to Veterans Day, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to experience Echoes of the Past—a concert that explores how music gives voice to resilience, hope, and unity in times of struggle.

Under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Barbara Schubert, the performance traces a powerful journey through history and emotion, featuring:

  • Giuseppe Verdi – Overture to Nabucco
  • Paul Hindemith – Symphonie Mathis der Maler
  • Ottorino Respighi – Pini di Roma (The Pines of Rome)

From Verdi’s impassioned Nabucco, written as Italy fought for independence, to Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, composed in defiance of Nazi censorship, and Respighi’s cinematic Pines of Rome, culminating in a triumphant march of Roman legions, Echoes of the Past celebrates how music endures even in the darkest of times.

“These works remind us that great art often emerges from moments of great adversity,” said Schubert. “Each composer found light amid turmoil—turning personal and national struggle into something transcendent.”

In recognition of Veterans Day, the DSO will also honor the service and sacrifice of local veterans during the performance, inviting attendees to join in a moment of reflection and gratitude. Veterans and active-duty military members are encouraged to attend through the orchestra’s Symphony of Service initiative, which provides ongoing ticket discounts and VIP seating opportunities for veterans and their families.

Launching the 2025 Year-End Giving Campaign: “Because You Care, Music Thrives Here”
The November concert also marks the launch of the DSO’s 2025 Year-End Giving Campaign, which celebrates the community’s vital role in sustaining live symphonic music across DuPage County and beyond. Gifts made at or before the concert will help fund:

  • Educational programs reaching over 6,000 students each year
  • Sensory-friendly open rehearsals for neurodivergent audiences
  • Free community concerts that bring orchestral music to public spaces

Contributors will be recognized as part of the inaugural “Music Thrives Society,” honoring those who help ensure that music continues to inspire, educate, and unite.
