Felonies, Reckless Driving, Mob Action Amid 'Teen Takeovers' In Western Suburb

Police in Naperville say around 200 teenagers gathered last Friday and 100 last Saturday netting "multiple citations for unlawful behavior."

NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville police issued "multiple citations for unlawful behavior" and two juveniles were charged with felonies after two gatherings that involved hundreds of teens and younger adults last weekend. The incidents prompted police to issue a warning that they will be increasing patrols and illegal behavior "will not be tolerated."

According to the post on the Naperville Police Department's Facebook page, some 200 "teens and young adults" gathered in downtown Naperville on May 16 and engaged in "disruptive" behavior. A girl, 15, from Aurora was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction and littering.

On May 17, police say around 100 people congregated in northeast Naperville and some of the individuals were seen "driving recklessly and lighting off fireworks." A man, 20, from McHenry was charged with mob action, reckless conduct, reckless driving and criminal damage to property.

Per the post, residents and visitors "will likely notice more Naperville Police officers in our downtown, at special events, and around other highly populated areas throughout the city to help prevent disruptive behavior and encourage a safe, welcoming environment for all. Our officers will be highly visible in areas where people typically congregate and there will be zero tolerance for trespassing, disorderly conduct, fighting, or any behavior that puts others at risk."

At the start of summer 2024, a public meeting was held regarding "rowdy teen gatherings." Chicago aldermen have been pushing for curfews amid teen takeovers downtown, at least two of which involved shootings.

In nearby Glen Ellyn, new biking rules were implemented after groups of teens were seen "riding recklessly" on e-bikes.

Naperville residents are encouraged to report behavior that is unsafe, illegal or suspicious. Parents are urged to discourage teen children from taking part in similar gatherings.
