NAPERVILLE, IL — A proposal to increase the sales tax in Naperville will head to the city council in August. The .25 percent increase aims to make up for revenue lost after the statewide one percent grocery tax was repealed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Tribune reports.

The proposal would increase Naperville's sales tax from .75 percent to one percent for a temporary period of two year. The change would require food and beverage taxes to decrease from 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent.

If Naperville opts for the sales tax increase, it would forgo the option to implement its own one percent grocery tax as a way to regain the revenue lost by the repeal.
