Dan Firks is a licensed realtor of more than 22 years who specializes in helping clients purchase and sell single-family homes and income properties. He prides himself on his knowledge of current transactions, school districts, neighborhoods and related services, including mortgages, insurance and inspections.

As an agent of Defined Realty Group, a 10-person team that helps a family move every three days, Firks deeply cares about not only his own community but the well-being of others in need, particularly those whose entire lives were rocked by Hurricane Harvey.

Last month, Firks expected to attend a global Keller Williams conference in Austin — but he and his 4,100 colleagues soon realized they had much more important work to do.

Keller Williams leaders ditched the conference plans to send their agents to Houston and beyond for Hurricane Harvey relief from September 11-15.

More than 4,100 Keller Williams real estate agents, including Naperville agent Dan Firks, helped with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts Sept. 11-15.

Firks, who has been selling real estate in the western Chicago suburbs since 1999, stocked food, sorted clothes and filled bins with towels and toiletries on the outskirts of Houston. Agents also helped clean more than 150 flooded homes and worked with nonprofits such as Austin Disaster Relief Network, Central Texas Food Bank and Salvation Army.

Firks said he’ll never forget the looks on Houston residents’ faces when thousands of agents on 120 buses rolled into town to help. Of course, they brought their networking and team-building skills to the solemn task at hand, too.

“It’s just like selling a house,” Firks said. “We can talk with people and assure them we are there to do whatever it takes to get them back on their feet. They don’t know where to turn? We’ll help guide them through the process with teamwork.”

The agents, including about 50 from the Naperville office, volunteered during the day at hurricane-ravaged sites and returned to Austin in the evening for events that raised awareness and funds.

The massive volunteer and fundraising effort is just part of the culture at Keller Williams.
The world’s largest real estate company is raising $20 million for hurricane recovery, and its nonprofit, KW Cares, sent more than a dozen 18-wheelers filled with supplies to areas hit by hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“These people were basically left homeless and with nowhere to turn,” Firks said. “It was amazing to be able to help these families through what will most likely be their biggest nightmare. Truly rewarding.”
