Naperville Kmart to Close; Other Layoffs Loom for Walgreens, Sun-Times Media

Nine companies are reportedly preparing for nearly 1,200 layoffs throughout Illinois, including Walgreens, Sun-Times Media and a Naperville Kmart, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

Kmart, part of Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp., plans to lay off 98 employees when it closes its Naperville store in the spring. The store, located at 1199 E. Ogden Ave., could close as early as late March, reported Crain's.

Employees at Deerfield-based Walgreens will face layoffs as well. The company will reportedly lay off 65 warehouse workers in west suburban Berkeley, reported Crain's.

Walgreens has nearly a dozen locations throughout Naperville. 

Sun-Times Media, publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, Naperville Sun, Beacon News and other suburban papers, warns that 274 jobs in Glenview, Tinley Park and Aurora could be eliminated due to consolidation.

Sun-Times announced plans in December to close the Naperville Sun and Beacon News newspaper office in Aurora to "eliminate inefficiencies" in Sun-Times Media.

News of the layoffs comes less than a week after Naperville-based Tellabs announced plans to cut about 300 jobs this year.
