NEW LENOX, IL — Two New Lenox residents were hit by identity theft hours apart on the same day, according to New Lenox police reports.
Police were called Dec. 28 at 12:30 a.m. to a home on the 2300 block of Fountain Lane, for a report of identity theft. The person told police they had received a call from someone purporting to work for Verizon. The caller asked the person if they were attempting to purchase phones in Miami. The caller then texted the victim a link to help cancel the transaction. After the person clicked the link, their phone lost service. They then received emails that their passwords on their Chase Bank, Capital One and Comcast accounts had been changed.
Hours later at 8:30 a.m., police were called to a home in the 2200 block of Runway Drive, for a similar incident. The caller relayed the same information to the resident, also then sending a link via text message. When the victim clicked the link, their phone lost service. Nothing else was effected, police said.
