EDC Opponents Gather in New Lenox, Address Speedway President

Residents still riled from the three-day Memorial Day weekend Electric Daisy Carnival concert that rocked them from their beds had a face-to-face June 6 with Chicagoland Speedway President Scott Paddock at New Lenox Village Hall. 

About 20 people from New Lenox, Manhattan, Elwood and Joliet Township gathered together to state their positions in regard to the future of the EDC concert at Chicagoland Speedway. The concert irked residents as much as 12 miles away when the music, especially bass-pounding vibrations, rattled them in their homes for three nights straight between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. 

Chicagoland Speedway President Scott Paddock attended the meeting to listen to the outcry expressed by those who relayed quality of life interruptions that negatively impacted their young children, including youngsters with special needs.

A few of the same residents spoke out against the concert at a June 3 pre-council meeting in Joliet. New Lenox's Chuck Soukup made a point to address his concerns a both meetings. He focused his attention on reasonable time restrictions, suggesting an 11 p.m. concert shut-down.      

Mayor Tim Baldermann said several New Lenox residents approached him to facilitate a meeting that would further advance their interests. As a result, an hour-long meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Village Hall served their needs. 

His take on the outcome of the meeting with Paddock was optimistic. Paddock listened respectfully, he said. In a few weeks, the mayor anticipates a follow-up meeting with officials from the City of Joliet. They're still at the fact gathering stage, practicing due diligence said. 

"I'm confident that we're going to be able to work this stuff out. ...We're not anti-any community event that brings people out to have fun," but any event has to draw a line when it comes to interfering with neighboring communities. In this case, New Lenox was particularly impacted and those in Manhattan, Elwood, Joliet Township felt the vibrations that lingered till 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Residents in Mokena, Frankfort and even Orland Park complained of the noise that emaneted from the Chicagoland Speedway.
