First Full-Time New Lenox Fire Chief Dies At 82, District Pays Homage

Ken Hossack, Sr. died Friday, Oct. 25. He served the district for 46 years before retiring in 2006.

NEW LENOX, IL — The New Lenox Fire Protection District is remembering one of its own—former chief Kenneth Hossack, Sr.

Hossack died Friday, Oct. 25 at 82 years old.

Hossack started with the New Lenox Fire Protection District as a volunteer firefighter when he was just 18 years old, the district said. In 1982, he became the district's first full-time chief, a rank he held until his retirement in 2006. He served the district for 46 years.

"During his time as Chief, he oversaw many of the things which have made the District what it is today, including the addition of two fire stations and the relocation of another," district officials said.

In addition to his dedication to the district, Hossack enjoyed waterfowl hunting that began at an early age with his father, according to his obituary. He also looked forward to his annual walleye fishing trip to Lake Erie with his wife, Lynn. Trips in his motorhome to various dirt racing events were also a favorite of his. His greatest joy was found spending time with his family and friends.

Hossack is survived by his wife Lynn (nee Runty) Hossack, children Phyllis (Kendall) Kerrigan of Coal City, Vicki (Joe) Zastrow of Goose Lake and Kenneth (Nuala) Hossack Jr. of Lehigh Acres, Florida. Mother-in-law Barbara (Bob) Runty. Also survived by seven grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Bob (Carla) Runty and Cindy (Chip) Brown, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 2 to 6 p.m., with a memorial service following at 6 p.m. at Hickey Memorial Chapel, 2100 Calistoga Drive, in New Lenox.

In recognition of his love for spending time with his family, they ask that in lieu of flowers, people "enjoy time with your family and friends as Ken did."
