Lincoln-Way Central High Hosted Teen Safe Driving

Lincoln-Way Central High hosted their Teen Safe Driving event recently in the fieldhouse at Central.

“This is the fourth year of the safe driving event. The slogan this year is Accident

Prevention is our No.1 Intention”, noted Chris Hack, teacher-sponsor of the event. The purpose of the event was to give students information about safe driving skills and to show them the dangers of texting while driving. The group of students also wanted to continue to raise awareness about the hazards of alcohol and drug impaired driving, explained Hack.

“Everything went well today. There was a good turnout of students, over 1,400 from the physical education (PE) classes. We choose the sophomore, junior, and senior P.E. classes because of the issues and consequences of distracted driving,” added Mike Foster, assistant teacher sponsor.

Student volunteers organized displays and activities for their fellow students to be involved with to get the message out about how important it is for them to drive safely.

Andrew Doepp, sophomore, was interested in the texting while driving simulator
supplied by the Illinois State Police.

“This is a lot harder than I thought. I don’t text and drive,” stated Doepp.

Four groups sponsored different displays and information booths for the high school students to view and participate in. Sponsor groups were: Illinois State Police, Will County Sheriff, Will County Dispatchers, and the Victim Impact citizen group.

Some of the displays included were: AAA Texting Simulator; Safe Driving Jeopardy; Impaired Vision Goggles; Poster Voting; Distracted Driving Demos; Red Light/Green Light game; and Car Decorating.

The 16 Lincoln-Way Central student volunteers that organized the Teen Safe Driving Event were: Jake Populorum, Emily Marfileno, Alexandra Lockhart, Sarah Stella, Rachel Goodrich, Susan Noto, Rose Humiston, Hannah Janel, Rachel Winkle, Megan Klipstein, Ethan Barnett, Alex Luchowski, Meagan Barnett, Sarah Zarnowski, Liz McNeely, and Nina Torres.
