NEW LENOX, IL — A problematic intersection has been given an additional and much-needed traffic safety measure, with the creation of a four-way stop at Nelson and Delaney roads.

Months after the transfer of a portion of the road from Manhattan Township into New Lenox's jurisdiction, the four-way stop is in place. The intersection has been plagued by traffic crashes in recent years, and many have called for increased safety measures there.

The intersection saw at least a dozen accidents over the last two years, New Lenox Police Chief Louis Alessandrini told Patch.

"It took awhile to work through the State, but we’re happy to have them installed," Mayor Tim Baldermann told Patch. "Stop signs aren’t always the answer, but in this location they were a necessity."

The New Lenox Village Board in September 2024 approved the transfer of Delaney Road from Tanaga Basin to Nelson Road, then pulling it into the municipal street system. Stop signs on north-south Nelson Road were pre-existing. The Village was then able to work with the Illinois Department of Transportation to advance the measure to create a four-way stop with signage on east-west Delaney.

"Please be safe!" Baldermann said on social media Tuesday, as drivers noticed the signs. "They are new and not everyone will be expecting them."
