NEW LENOX, IL — New Lenox Police have gained a new, rather furry, officer.

The department on Monday announced the addition of a Labrador canine officer to its ranks. The dog is a multipurpose K9 that is being trained to assist police with tracking and detention.

She doesn't have a name—yet.

"We are sending our top three name choices over to New Lenox School District 122 and seeking the help of the students to decide on her name," police said on social media.

Officer Candace Guidry has been selected to be her handler and they officially begin police K9/handler training in May. They're expected to join the community in mid-June.

The dog is purchased through the office of Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow, using funds from drug seizures and asset forfeitures, and will be another member of the Will County League of Extraordinary Canines & Friends.
