The patient—a 25-year-old man wearing only a hospital gown—then fled northbound on I-355, in the direction of his home in the Lockport area, New Lenox Police Chief Louis Alessandrini said.

New Lenox Police responded to the scene, and after obtaining the man's home address, notified the Will County Sheriff's Office and Lockport Police. Will County Sheriff's deputies were able to find the man, who then left the car and fled on foot. He was captured and taken into custody without incident, Alessandrini said.

The suspect, identified as Ali Salamah of Lockport, was returned to Silver Cross Hospital and hospitalized for continued treatment. Charges are pending, Alessandrini said.

No weapons were displayed during the carjacking, police said. The 39-year-old woman was not injured, nor was Salamah. The stolen Nissan Rogue was recovered.

"We’re thankful no one was hurt," Alessandrini said. "These situations can be dangerous, but luckily everybody is safe."
