‘Secret Shopper’ Job Actually a Scam: Police

A New Lenox woman thought she had been hired to work as a secret shopper but was actually roped into a scam, police said.

NEW LENOX, IL — A New Lenox woman was ripped off by scammers who tricked her into thinking she was working as a secret shopper, police said.

Officers met with the woman at the police station on the afternoon of Aug. 24 and she reportedly told them how “she signed up to be a secret shopper and received a check to begin the work.”

“She was instructed to purchase gift cards and send the information on the gift cards to an agent,” police said.

The woman reportedly “purchased the gift cards and forwarded the information only to find out that the check she received was fraudulent.”

Detectives were to look into the matter.
