Six Rabid Bats Captured in a Will County Garage

Entire Homer Glen family getting rabies shots in the aftermath.

A garage nesting ground for rabid bats has put an entire south suburban family on the defensive, forcing everyone in the Homer Glen household to get rabies shots.

Reports the Chicago Tribune:

Despite needing shots, the homeowner says it hasn’t been too terrible, while an official who’s been with the Will County Health Department for more than three decades describes the situation as “pretty bizarre” and unprecedented.

Six rabid bats and a seventh that did not test positive for rabies had been found or trapped in the garage or attic as of Friday, and the three family members, including a 2-year-old, are getting medical treatment for precautionary reasons.

“At this point, it’s no big deal,” the homeowner, who asked not to be identified, said Friday. “Nobody here was bit. They (the bats) were just in the garage, not in the house.”
