No Charges In Reported Attempted Carjacking In New Lenox: Police

NEW LENOX, IL — Police are not charging an 18-year-old man after a New Lenox woman and her son believed they were almost carjacked Sunday, according to New Lenox police.

The New Lenox woman posted on Facebook Tuesday about the Sunday incident. According to the woman's Facebook post, the attempted carjacking happened along North Cooper Road near Locust Street around 5:20 p.m.

In the Facebook post, the woman wrote that she was driving northbound on North Cooper Road when she came upon a black SUV stopped awkwardly in the road. When she attempted to pass the vehicle, the man attacked and tried to pull her son out of the vehicle, the woman wrote.

Several New Lenox police officers and Will County Sheriff's deputies responded to the incident, according to New Lenox Police Deputy Chief Micah Nuesse. The attempted carjacker was described as a man who appeared to have "special needs," according to the police department. He didn't display a weapon, and authorities believe the attempted carjacking was an isolated incident, Nuesse said.

New Lenox police continued with their investigation and found the 18-year-old man and his adult relative who was with him during the incident Sunday, Nuesse said.

The 18 year old, who is a New Lenox resident, was attempting to get away from the relative and tried to enter the woman's vehicle as it passed because he believed it was someone he knew, according to police. The adult relative confirmed that story with police.

There were no threats made, nor were there any weapons displayed in this incident, Nuesse said. Police said it was an isolated incident and that there is no further threat to the community.

"We are unable to prove any criminal intent on behalf of the 18 year old," Nuesse said. "No charges are being filed at this time."
