104-Year-Olds Enjoy Cigars, Too

Max Fabian, of Niles, is celebrating his 104th birthday on Saturday at the North Suburban YMCA, where he still exercises regularly. No slacker, Fabian worked at his job until age 101.

Max Fabian, of Niles, is the North Suburban YMCA's oldest member, and he's celebrating his 104th birthday at the Northbrook facility on Saturday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m.

Patch caught up with Fabian on his way to the YMCA, where he still exercises a few times a week. He actually came in looking rather stylish, showing up to the Y in denim shirt, a striped blue cardigan and a dotted, reddish scarf.

At 104, Fabian says his hearing and balance aren't what they used to be, but points out "I'm very fortunate I don't have any pain."

The Chicago-native served in World War 2 where he performed counter intelligence while stationed in the South Pacific. Afterward he worked as a detective for the Chicago police department for more than 15 years, until taking a job at Northbrook's A-Z Industries, where he remained until 2011.

Fabian is not a very shy man and has a lot to say about Chicago politics and the unfortunate crime rate in his native Garfield Park. But he still finds ways to enjoy himself — visiting restaurants, exercising, even smoking cigars.

"I smoke a cigar every day," he said. "My doctor says it's good for me."

He seemed serious, but Fabian knows how to tell a joke.

"You got to have a good sense of humor," he said. "You can't be serious all the time."
