Iconic Public Servant Cal Sutker Passes Away
Active for decades as a leader in Niles Township government and a former Cook County commissioner, Sutker recently passed away at the age of 89.

Calvin "Cal" Sutker, a former Niles Township Committeeman, a Cook County Commissioner, Illinois Democratic Party Chairman, Skokie Village Trustee and father to current Village of Skokie Trustee Edie Sue Sutker and Judge Shelley Sutker Dermer, passed away at the age of 89.
Sutker was also the brother to Ada Rabinowitz, Niles Township President.

The Sutkers come from a long line of civic service.
Gov. Pat Quinn issued a statement regarding the passing of Sutker Friday, stating he was a driving force in Illinois politics and a strong advocate for the Jewish community.

“Illinois lost a devoted public servant with yesterday’s passing of Cal Sutker," Quinn said. "A World War II veteran, Cal Sutker spent four decades as a lawmaker and civic leader, a tireless promoter of such enduring institutions as the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park. His energy, integrity and infectious smile will be long-remembered.”
Mr. Sutker's funeral was held Friday, April 26. Services were held at Ezra Habonim Niles Township Jewish Congregation, 4500 Dempster St., in Skokie.
