Niles Wants To Give Veterans Keys To City; Needs Your Help
Village can't get names of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, so it's asking the public to identify them.

The village of Niles wants to give U.S. veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars the key to the city, said Niles Village Manager Steve Vinezeano at Tuesday's village board meeting.Â
There's just one hitch. Vinezeano said that because of security considerations, the village can't obtain the names and contact information of these veterans.
That leaves it up to veterans themselves, or their family members or friends, to call the village to inform them of the names of Niles residents who served in Iraq or Afghanistan. Â
"We’d love to invite them back here to honor their service," Vinezeano said. "Staff happens to be working on the key design as I speak."
There is no deadline for providing the names of veterans; they will be honored at future village board meetings, which occur at least once a month.
To provide the name of an Iraq or Afghanistan resident, phone village hall at (847) 588-8000.
