Summer Isn't Over Yet: How to Enjoy the Remaining Dog Days
The Morton Grove Park District has plenty to offer before school starts up and the mercury finally falls.

Advertisers may want you to believe that summer is about to end, school bells are ringing and before you know it, weโll be bundled up in winter parkas bracing ourselves for the next snowmageddon. (All of which they say you must prepare for by going out and buying stuff, of course.)
But according to the calendar โ and the thermometer โ thereโs still plenty of summer left and many outdoor activities for everyone in Morton Grove to enjoy.
โSummer hasnโt ended yet, August is a very busy month,โ said Morton Grove Park District Recreation Manager Kelly Smith. โThe park district still has quite a few programs going on.โ

One great way to get outside is to explore the more than 15 parks located throughout Morton Grove. Many athletic programs, including softball and basketball, are about to start their fall seasons. Other free events such as concerts in the park are happening during August as well. Hereโs a sampling of upcoming events to head to as summer continues:

Morton Grove Park District Tunes on Tuesday
Bring out your cowboy boots and hats tonight for Pamela Rose and Windy City Country. This five-piece group plays a unique style featuring contemporary country as well as classic rock โnโ roll hits. The starts at 7 p.m. in the Pavilion at . It will be the last concert in the park for the summer.
Party in the Park and Ice Cream Social ย
What better way to cool off during the hot month of August then by enjoying some ice cream under a shady tree in the park? On Aug. 11, free ice cream will be available at from 6 to 7 p.m. Representatives from the Morton Grove Park District will be on hand and there will be plenty of family friendly activities as well.
Athletic Leagues
The fall season for adult softball leagues begins Aug. 24. Teams can still register for the 14โ and 16โ coed rec leagues. The park district also has a brand new fall adult basketball league this year, which begins on Sept. 11. Basketball leagues include men's 6' 5"ย and under, women's, and men's "B" leagues. Events at Oriole and Harrer Pool
The pool is a perfect place for summer fun and both and pools will be open until the end of August. On Friday, Oriole Pool will be holding an open swim followed by the movie โYoggie Bearโ at 9 p.m. At Harrer Pool on Aug. 19, the movie Toy Story 3 will be showing at 9 p.m. For teens there will be a โBack to School Splashโ pool party at Harrer Pool on Aug. 12 at 5:30 pm.
Abbreviated hours for the pools begin on Aug. 15 and they will be closed for the season after Labor Day.
Field/Gym Rentals
The park district has several fields, rooms and a gym available for rent, which are great for family outings or afternoon fun. โWe have four multiple purpose buildings or field houses that are available for rentals on the weekend, as well as rooms at our community center,โ Smith said. Smith added that the park districtโs fall brochure will be mailed out to residents this week. This provides information on various programs such as dance and music classes and other indoor activities.
