Northbrook Obituary: Ethel Uritz Marcus, 97

The following obituary is from Chicago Jewish Funerals: 

Ethel Uritz Marcus nee Cooper, (Passed April 29, 2014), 97 years young.

A woman of valor, Ethel’s true beauty lay within her.  She was competent, kind, gracious, and grateful for whatever life gave her.  She laughed readily and was everyone’s personal confidante.  Her love of mah jongg and her home-made mandel brot were legendary. 

By her example, Ethel taught all who knew and loved her how to live and how to die.  She did not believe in complaining; rather, she approached old age like everything else, with grace.  

Ethel was preceded in death by her two wonderful husbands, Sol Uritz and Gilbert Marcus.  Her legacy includes her three daughters, Carole (Burton) Schmarak, Marsha (the late Alan DeWolfe) Michaelson, Helene (Errol) Stone; her stepchildren, Stephen (Lynne) Marcus, Stuart Marcus, and Jane Marcus; her adored grandchildren, Bradley (Gina Propp) Schmarak, Beth (Daniel) Harris, Alaina (Larry) Kanfer, Gregory Michaelson, and Elena DeWolfe.  She was the fun-loving Great-grandmother (Bubbee) of Tyler, Grant, Sammy, Anna, David, and Xavier; the loving daughter of Ida (nee Savitsky) Cooper Fisher; and the dear sister of the late Goldie (the late Harold) Goldstein.  She was the devoted aunt to many, including Helen (Richard) Nelson, Dr. Rosalind Epstein, and Sandra Oppenheimer (James Follingstad).

The family thanks Lyn Tagle and Joy Alvarez for their extraordinary care and devotion to Ethel who loved them dearly.

Ethel, your life was a gift to us.  You will live within us for the rest of our lives. 

Service Thursday 11:30 AM May 1st 2014 at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 N. Sheridan Road, Glencoe, IL 60022. Interment Westlawn Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to North Shore Congregation Israel and Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center.
