Beer Benefit: Roscoe Village Pub Crawl to Help Food Pantry

The Roscoe Village Neighbors’ annual November bar crawl is in sight, and that means it’s time to start sipping beer, supporting the local economy and helping those less fortunate.

Slated for this Saturday at 1:30 p.m., the bar crawl is designed to pull in canned food donations to the Common Pantry in North Center while residents support local taverns in Roscoe Village. Colleen Flood, a board member with the Roscoe Village Neighbors, say she’s been organizing the pub crawl for about 15 years.

“The reason we have them is so we can donate canned goods and funds to the Common Pantry at the corner of Damen and Bradley,” Flood said. “We ask our pub crawlers to donate $20, and with that $20 they get free lunch at Black Rock Tavern, and they get a Roscoe Village Neighbors Pub Crawl t-shirt.”

“We’re just a very neighborly and very business oriented group. We like to keep the money in the neighborhood.”

Flood said the crawl sees a pretty good turnout, and with this weekend’s weather forecasted to be partly cloudy and 65 degrees, she’s hoping for neighbors to come out and support the local bars and restaurants.

Starting at Black Rock Tavern, the group is scheduled to stop at six different bars on Roscoe Street and Damen Avenue for one hour each. And with different drink specials at each business, Flood is hoping those looking to save some money will still come out, meet their neighbors and show their support for the pantry.

“It’s usually quite busy, but with the finances in people’s lives right now, it’s kind of hard to know exactly how many will come,” Flood said. “…We’re just a very neighborly and very business oriented group. We like to keep the money in the neighborhood.”

Pub-crawlers can bring canned goods to donate to the pantry, and their $20 for lunch and afternoon fun goes directly to fund the pantry’s hot meal food program.

Along with Black Rock Tavern, the group will also stop by Mulligan’s Public House, Village Tap, Riverview Tavern, Four Moon Tavern, and lastly, Four Treys Tavern, Flood’s business of 44 years.

“I actually own a bar,” Flood said. “It’s Four Trey’s, the last stop and where we sing karaoke.”
