Cooling Shelters Near Oak Forest

OAK FOREST, IL — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until 7 p.m. for northern Illinois, including the Oak Forest area.

According to the NWS, heat index values could reach 110 degrees Tuesday, as yet another round of severe weather is expected in the evening. These temperatures will lead to an increased risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, the weather service said. Outdoor activities and sun exposure should be limited.

To add, severe weather is possible again Tuesday evening. According to the weather service, damaging winds are the primary risk with these storms, and there could also be large hail, torrential downpours and a brief, embedded tornado.

Cook County's Emergency Management and Regional Security said the following tips should help with the extreme heat:

• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Try to stay in the shade or indoors as much as possible.
• If working outside, take frequent breaks, preferably in an air-conditioned space.
• Check on elderly neighbors and those with functional needs.
• Take pets indoors and make sure they have plenty of water.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.
