OAK FOREST, IL β€” Across the United States, people will be celebrating Memorial Day on Monday, a national holiday to honor those who died in active military service.

Although it's a national holiday, most retail businesses around the city will be open. But it's always idea to call ahead and check.

Here's a look at how Memorial Day will affect institutions and services around Oak Forest:

City Government: City Hall and city offices will be closed. Federal, state and county offices also will be closed.

Schools: No classes for Forest Ridge Elementary School District 142, Arbor Park School District 145, Community Consolidated School District 146, Bremen High School District 228 and Consolidated School District 230.

Acorn Public Library: The library will be closed.

Postal Service: No mail service, and post offices will be closed.

Trash Pickup: Garbage collection service will be delayed until the next day because of the holiday. Go to Homewood Disposal Service's website for more information.

Banks: Most financial institutions will be closed. Call ahead to be sure.
