Club and Regional Sertoman of the Year

Connie Barrera

The Sertoman of the Year Award is the highest recognition a club can bestow upon one of its members. It celebrates a member's lifetime contributions to Sertoma and the community. Nominating a fellow club member for this prestigious award is always an honor, and it's especially exciting when the nominee is a dear friend. When the individual you wish to acknowledge is also one of the most loyal, dedicated and enthusiastic Sertomans, the honor becomes a genuine thrill.

Not everyone qualifies for consideration for this esteemed award. The attributes required include tenacity, personal involvement in community activities, demonstrated leadership skills, and a willingness to take on responsibility without being asked.

Connie has been involved with Action Sertoma since 2016. Connie is exceptionally dedicated and plays a vital role in all our fundraising efforts. On average, she contributes 10 hours per week, totaling over 500 hours annually. Connie helps with our Queen of Hearts. As a club board member, she attends monthly meetings and serves as the voice of our club in the southwest suburbs of Cook & Will counties as she works weekly to maintain our website and managing our social media presence on Facebook, Instagram and X. In the last 5 years, thanks to Connie's efforts, she has made it easy for the community to donate through our club website and she has helped us move into the latest way of donations coming into our club. Also, our members can easily connect with one another through a dedicated section on our website. We wouldn't have achieved our current level of social media success without Connie's contributions. Additionally, she does remarkable work as our club photographer, capturing the excitement of events which are the Annual Golf Outing, Fall Fest, Holiday Gathering and Membership Drive.

Connie has been an Oak Forest resident her entire life. She has always been extremely involved with the community. She was heavily involved and part of the Oak Fest committee for 10 years, local cheerleading program, Relay for Life, and more. She is a fantastic mother of three beautiful daughters. Her love for her girls is unsurpassed and is evident in her everyday life. As her oldest daughter said:

"Our Mom has taught us to always believe in yourself and to never give up on our dreams. Her passion and dedication to Sertoma has inspired us to give back to the community. She truly is our rock, everything she does is with 110% and she puts her blood, sweat and tears into everything she puts her mind to. She really is the most amazing woman we know and us girls are extremely lucky to have her as our mom. She is our role model, and we strive to be just half the woman she is one day."
