Thursday Shooting Marks 171st On Cook County Expressway This Year

A woman was shot while driving on Interstate 57 Thursday morning. The incident is the 24 shooting on that Interstate alone, ISP said.

MARKHAM, IL β€” A woman was shot while driving on Interstate 57 early Thursday morning and suffered minor injuries, according to Illinois State Police. Data from police shows the shooting is at least the 171st on a Cook County expressway in 2021.

The woman drove herself to Holy Cross Hospital after being shot near 155th Street at around 2 a.m. She was transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital where she has non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.

Northbound lanes were closed at 159th Street for nearly four hours while troopers investigated. They were reopened in time for rush hour at 6:15 a.m.

A detailed list of Cook County expressway shootings provided by Illinois State Police lists Thursday morning's shooting as the 24th on I-57. Chicago police told Patch there have been 52 shootings on the Dan Ryan Expressway as of Thursday and 36 on the Eisenhower.
