Safety Issue Cleared At OLCHS, 1 Student In Custody: Police

A student involved in a domestic incident, "who may have left with a gun," did not report to class, police said. No gun was recovered.

OAK LAWN, IL — Oak Lawn Community High School was placed on lockdown while police searched the building for a student said to be involved in a “domestic incident” earlier Thursday morning. The student, a juvenile, is in police custody and classes have resumed at the high school.

Div. Chief Gerald Vetter, of the Oak Lawn Police Department, said officers were told by witnesses at the domestic incident that the student “may have left with a gun.”

“Nobody entered the school with a handgun and no threat was made to anybody at the school or to the school,” Vetter told Patch. “No gun has been recovered.”

The high school was placed on lockdown around 9:15 a.m. as a precautionary measure.

“The student with the safety concern was never on campus this morning, and that’s why we took precautions,” Dist. 229 Supt. Mike Riordan told Patch.

It is not known if the student in custody s male or female.

“The school was locked down as a safety precaution,” Vetter told Patch. “When a school is involved, we throw everything at it.”

Classes have resumed at the high school.

“We’re trying to get through a somewhat normal day for the rest of the day,” Riordan said. “That is our hope.”
