The school was put on an immediate hard lockdown, police said.
BERWYN, IL — Three people are dead after a shooting on Tuesday afternoon outside a middle school in Berwyn, according to police.
The shooter killed two people and then turned the gun on himself in front of Lincoln Middle School, according to multiple media outlets and Berwyn North School District 98 Superintendent Michelle Smith, who said in a message to the district community that none of the people killed were Lincoln students.
Officers heard gunfire around 4 p.m. near the school in the 6400 block of 16th Street, police said. Upon arrival, they saw a male firing a rifle into a vehicle, and as they approached, the gunman opened fire on the officers, who took cover and did not shoot back, according to police.
