Here are the top three stories today in Oak Park-River Forest:
- Healthy Greens CBD shop in Oak Park will be closing its doors at the end of October due to various factors, including the size of its storefront. The owners, however, are actively searching for a new location in Oak Park or nearby suburbs and hope to reopen soon, despite the closure. (Wednesday Journal)
- The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is hosting an environmentally-friendly event on Sep. 30. Attendees can participate in paper shredding, pharmaceutical disposal, and electronics disposal. In return, a free tree and milkweed seeds will be given to each participant. There will also be the opportunity to win a free rain barrel. (Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago via Facebook)
- In Cook County and metro Chicago, community organizations are banding together to address the migrant crisis without increasing local taxes. They are urging Mayor Brandon Johnson and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle to request $300 million in federal funding from President Joe Biden to relocate migrants to more suitable shelters for the upcoming winter. They suggest repurposing the Thompson Center, a former Illinois Government Building, as a safe migrant center and are appealing to Google, the building's owner, to consider leasing it for this purpose.
